Leave-In Conditioner vs. Rinse-Out Conditioner for Curly Hair

Rinse-out conditioner is used after shampooing to add slip and make detangling easier before it is rinsed away. Leave-in conditioner remains on the hair in a smaller amount to support softness, manageability and styling between washes. Many curly-hair routines use both.

What rinse-out conditioner does

Apply rinse-out conditioner after cleansing. For curly or coily hair, distribute it through the full length, work in sections and detangle while the hair is damp and slippery. Rinse according to the label.

What leave-in conditioner does

Apply leave-in to wet or damp hair after washing or during a targeted refresh. It can improve slip, softness and manageability, but more product is not automatically more moisturizing.

Can leave-in replace rinse-out conditioner?

Sometimes a product label permits multiple uses, but a leave-in should not automatically replace a rinse-out conditioner. The formulas, directions and amount left on the hair can differ. Follow each product’s label and judge the finished routine by comfort, manageability and buildup.

A simple order

1. Shampoo the scalp.
2. Apply rinse-out conditioner through the lengths.
3. Detangle gently in sections.
4. Rinse as directed.
5. Apply a modest amount of leave-in to wet or damp hair.
6. Style with low tension.
