How to Care for Curly Hair After Swimming

The most useful swimming routine has three stages: reduce direct exposure before entering the water, rinse promptly afterward, and restore slip with conditioner before detangling.

Before swimming

1. Wet the hair with clean water.
2. Apply a modest amount of leave-in conditioner through the lengths.
3. Put the hair into a loose, contained style.
4. Wear a swim cap when practical.

A swim cap may not keep every strand completely dry, but it can reduce direct exposure and tangling. Avoid styles that feel painful or pull at the hairline.

Immediately after swimming

Rinse the hair thoroughly with clean water. The American Academy of Dermatology advises swimmers to wash with a swimmer-focused shampoo and follow with a deep conditioner. How often that stronger cleanse is needed depends on exposure, buildup and how the hair responds.

Detangle with slip

After cleansing, apply conditioner generously enough to create slip. Work in sections, start at the ends and move gradually toward the roots. Do not brush tightly coiled hair while it is dry.

If you swim often

• Use a reliable swim cap and loose under-cap style.
• Follow a consistent rinse-and-condition routine.
• Clarify periodically when residue accumulates.
• Reduce heat styling on already dry-feeling hair.
• Monitor the scalp for persistent irritation.

Dryness, breakage and a coated feel can often improve with routine changes. Burning, sores, severe itching or continuing scalp symptoms should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
